Wave

A few weeks ago, while on holiday on the Isle of Harris, we spent even more time than usual on the beach – in fact, on several, as we were spoiled for choice.

The surf which rolls into to the west of the island takes some beating, as there’s nothing between these shores and Canada and the waves have a power and a grandeur about them that I’ve not seen anywhere else.

As I stood on my favourite stretch of sand at Borve, I was mesmerised by the unending walls of water as they rolled in from the Atlantic and crashed onto the shore.

You could see the swell of a new wave building from far and watch it slowly crescendo….. until the crest was reached in a sublime torrent of pure energy, like an orchestra building a wall of sound to such a fevered pitch and intensity that it collapsed, extinguished with one inevitable, crashing breath.
